Bellingham Festival of Music establishes endowment
to promote music education

Bellingham, WA – Oct. 15, 2009 – The Bellingham Festival of Music, which for the past 17 years has presented an internationally renowned  summer festival celebrating classical music, was presented today with a contribution of $7,750 by the American Sinfonietta, to establish a permanent  endowment  to promote music education in Whatcom county.

The American Sinfonietta was the orchestra-in-residence for the first ten years of the Bellingham Festival of Music and was instrumental in establishing the international reputation of the Bellingham Festival of Music.

Barrie Austin, president of the American Sinfonietta, presented the check at the Bellingham Festival of Music annual meeting at Lairmont Manor. “A core mission of The American Sinfonietta has always been to promote appreciation of music through education. The Bellingham Festival of Music through its master classes and Beethoven in the Schools have provided excellent examples.”

The Sinfonietta contribution will set up a permanent endowment administered by the Whatcom Community Foundation -- to which others are encouraged to contribute --  to be used for the educational outreach program of the Festival.
